Lightweight, durable and easily mouldable, they have replaced metals, wood and glass in a wide range of sectors, opening up new possibilities for design and production.

But not all plastics are the same: their properties vary enormously depending on their composition, the manufacturing process and their intended use. Understanding how plastics are classified and what characteristics make them unique is the first step towards making an informed choice of the most suitable material for each project.

What are plastics?

The term ‘plastics’ refers to a broad family of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials produced through the polymerisation of organic monomers.

In other words, they are compounds formed of long, flexible molecular chains (polymers), capable of deforming under the action of heat or pressure and retaining the desired shape once cooled.

Depending on their thermal behaviour, plastics are divided into two main categories, which we examined in detail in a recent article: thermoplastics and thermosets. This is a fundamental distinction that determines their use, workability and recyclability.

The first category: thermoplastics

Thermoplastics are plastics which, when heated, soften and can be reshaped multiple times without altering their chemical structure. This makes them ideal for manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, extrusion or blow moulding, offering considerable freedom in terms of shape and application.
Among the most common are:

Polyethylene (PE): lightweight, flexible and impact-resistant, used for packaging and piping.

Polypropylene (PP): rigid, with excellent chemical and wear resistance, ideal for technical components.

Polystyrene (PS): transparent or expanded, used in packaging and design.

Polycarbonate (PC): highly durable, transparent and shatterproof.

PET: widely used in the food and textile industries.

Their recyclability is a key advantage from a sustainability perspective: thermoplastics can be melted down, remelted and transformed into new products, thereby reducing waste and the consumption of virgin raw materials.

The second major category: thermosetting plastics

Thermosetting plastics behave in the opposite way: once heated, they undergo an irreversible chemical transformation that makes them rigid and non-deformable. They cannot therefore be reshaped, but they offer excellent performance in terms of mechanical strength, dimensional stability and thermal insulation.
Among the most commonly used are:

Epoxy resins, known for their adhesion and hardness;

Phenolic and melamine resins, used in electrical components and coatings;

Thermosetting polyurethanes, used in engineering foams and protective coatings.

Although they are not as recyclable as thermoplastics, thermosets are indispensable in applications where high resistance to heat, stress and chemicals is required, such as in the automotive, aerospace and electronics industries.

Elastomers: flexibility and shape memory

Elastomers represent a third category of plastics, characterised by extremely high elasticity. They are formed of long polymer chains – composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen or silicon – linked by cross-links that allow the material to deform and return to its original shape after being stretched or compressed.

Most elastomers are thermosetting and require a vulcanisation process (using heat, radiation or a chemical reaction) to harden and stabilise. However, there are also thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), which combine the flexibility of rubber with the processability of thermoplastics, making them ideal for injection moulding and for soft components, seals and coatings.

Elastomers are used in numerous sectors: from technical textiles to mechanical engineering, right through to medical devices, where strength, elasticity and durability are required.

The advantageous properties of plastics

Plastics have become indispensable in every sector of manufacturing thanks to a unique combination of properties that make them cost-effective, durable and versatile. Here are the key characteristics that explain their success:

Chemically inert. Plastics do not corrode and are resistant to the effects of air, water and many chemicals. This is why they are used in containers for chemicals, acids or alkalis.

Lightweight, strong and durable. For the same volume, they weigh much less than metals, yet offer excellent resistance to impact and wear, ensuring a long service life for components.

Thermal and electrical insulators. Plastics do not conduct heat or electricity. They are therefore ideal for tool handles, cable sheathing, plugs and sockets.

Highly malleable. They can be moulded into complex shapes and with varying thicknesses, adapting to any design requirement.

Cost-effective and easy to work with. Plastic injection moulding enables rapid, precise production at low cost, making plastic a cost-effective choice compared to traditional materials.

How to choose the right plastic

Every project requires a careful assessment of the physical and mechanical properties of the material. The main factors to consider when selecting a plastic material are:

Mechanical strength: the ability to withstand impact, tension or compression.

Flexibility and rigidity: to be balanced according to the component’s function.

Thermal behaviour: ability to withstand or deform at certain temperatures.

Chemical compatibility: resistance to solvents, oils or corrosive agents.

Aesthetic appearance: transparency, colour, surface finish.

Sustainability: recyclability or use of recycled materials.

Choosing the right material not only optimises production, but also improves the performance, durability and environmental impact of the final product.

Beschi plastic textile accessories: innovation and sustainability

Plastics continue to evolve, adapting to the contemporary industry’s new demands for efficiency, sustainability and design.
